How attendance management works
Attendance management is how organizations capture when people work, apply shift and policy rules, correct exceptions, give managers visibility, and — when pay depends on time — hand approved outcomes into payroll.
Direct answer
Attendance systems record check-in/out (or equivalent time marks), classify each day against policy (present, late, absent, on leave, and similar statuses), allow authorized corrections, and produce inputs managers and payroll can trust.
Capturing time
Most modern systems use employee punches or check-in/out events. Some organizations still use timesheets. Either way, the goal is a dated record of work presence that can be audited later.
Policies before punches
Policies define shifts, grace periods, weekend rules, and how late or early marks are treated. Without written policy, software cannot consistently classify exceptions — and managers invent local rules.
Corrections (regularization)
Missed punches happen. Regularization is the controlled path to fix a day status with approval, so payroll does not inherit silent edits. Late regularizations after a pay freeze are a common month-end failure mode.
Manager team visibility
Supervisors need a team view — who is present, late, absent, on leave, or on holiday — so coverage decisions do not depend on chat updates alone.
Connection to leave and payroll
Leave coverage should align with attendance day status. Approved absences that reduce pay typically become loss-of-pay (LOP) inputs — see attendance to payroll LOP handoff. Leave policy edge cases such as sandwich leave can also affect balances and pay depending on policy.
Optional verification methods
Some organizations add location (GPS), network (IP), or biometric/face checks to reduce buddy punching. These are policy and privacy-sensitive choices — not universal requirements.
Dayzen attendance (verified)
Dayzen attendance management covers check-in/out with policy-aware shifts, GPS/IP verification, optional face verification, regularization, monthly calendars/logs, supervisor team matrices, and payroll generation sync for attendance and LOP. It does not claim automatic government filing or bank salary disbursement.
